St. Louis Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester collapsed on the bench Tuesday night at Honda Center after having a 'cardiac episode,' the team said.

The incident occurred with 7:50 left in the first period and the game between the Blues and Anaheim Ducks tied at 1-1.

His teammates immediately called for help and medical personnel rushed to him.

The game — which was delayed as the 17-year veteran was treated and concerned players on both sides gathered at center ice — eventually was called off after both teams went to their dressing rooms.

'Due to the medical emergency involving Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester, tonight’s game will be postponed and made up at a later date,' the Ducks tweeted.

The Ducks television station showed Bouwmeester's last shift before the incident and there was no contact with any player and no sign of any trouble.

Blues general manager Doug Armstrong provided an update late Tuesday night on the status of Bouwmeester, 36, and what had happened.

'With 7:50 remaining in the first period of our game tonight, Jay Bouwmeester suffered a cardiac episode and collapsed on our bench after completing his shift. Thankfully, with the quick response of our medical trainers, Anaheim medical trainers and their team physicians, they were able to stabilize Jay,' Armstrong wrote.

'He was alert and moving all of his extremities as he was transported to UC Irvine Medical Center. Currently, Jay is conscious and alert as he undergoes further testing by Anaheim's physicians. We will update Jay's condition on Wednesday morning.'

The Blues players' fathers, including Bouwmeester's, were at the game as part of the team's dads' trip, Blues broadcaster John Kelly said.

The NHL has postponed previous games in which there were medical emergencies, including Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer's incident in 2005 and one involving the Dallas Stars' Rich Peverley in 2014.
